Encapsulation cleaning
A low-moisture carpet-cleaning method that applies a polymer-based cleaning solution which crystallizes around suspended soil, allowing the encapsulated soil to be vacuumed away in subsequent passes.

Encapsulation cleaning is a low-moisture method commonly used in commercial settings where fast dry-times and predictable maintenance cycles matter. A polymer-based cleaning solution is agitated into the carpet with a counter-rotating brush or cylindrical machine. As it dries, the polymer crystallizes around the soil particles it has released from the fibers. The encapsulated soil then breaks free during routine vacuuming over the following days.
Because encapsulation uses far less water than hot-water extraction, carpet is typically dry and walkable within an hour, which is why the method is popular for offices, retail spaces, and other environments that cannot lose a full workday to cleaning. Encapsulation is recognized in IICRC S100 as a low-moisture interim maintenance method — it maintains appearance between deeper restorative cleanings rather than replacing them.
Encapsulation has a lower residue reactivation risk than shampoo methods because the polymer is designed to crystallize dry and be vacuumed away rather than remain sticky. It does not, however, reach soil that has settled into the backing or padding, and it does not address the deeper cleaning cycles that carpet manufacturer warranties typically call for on a 12–24 month interval. Most maintenance programs pair periodic encapsulation with less-frequent hot-water extraction.
